Things Babies Born in 2011 Will Never Know

With 3 great grandparents over 90, I often think about how much has changed in their lifetime..just think about what’s changed in the past 10yrs! It’s overwhelming.

Here’s an excerpt from the thought-provoking list:

Forgotten friends:
Remember when an old friend would bring up someone you went to high school with, and you’d say, “Oh yeah, I forgot about them!” The next generation will automatically be in touch with everyone they’ve ever known even slightly via Facebook.

Talking to one person at a time: Remember when it was rude to be with one person while talking to another on the phone? Kids born today will just assume that you’re supposed to use texting to maintain contact with five or six other people while pretending to pay attention to the person you happen to be physically next to.

Hiding: Not long ago, if you didn’t answer your home phone, that was that — nobody knew if you were alive or dead, much less where you might be. Now your phone is not only in your pocket, it can potentially tell everyone — including advertisers — exactly where you are.

My Practical Goals for 2011

These are the things I’m going to put into practice for the new year, they’re not in any particular order of importance…..

1.) Listen more and speak less.

2.) Expand my mental box by reading 12 books that I will not normally read.

3.) Travel to a place out of the country that I have not been to yet.

4.) Intensify my workout regiment to be able to run a 4:50 mile, 10.9 100yd, bench and pull-up my body-weight for 45 reps straight.

5.) Create more and consume less.

6.) Spend more social time with family and friends.

7.) Release my writings and ideas from over the years.

8.) Increase my net-worth by at least 11%.

9.) Create new traditions with my young family and friends.

10.) Eat cleaner foods.

What are yours???

Tony Porter: A Call to Men

Has anyone listened to his podcasts before? Thoughts? This clip was all over today so I decided to listen–pretty insightful.

At TEDWomen, Tony Porter makes a call to men everywhere: Don’t “act like a man.” Telling powerful stories from his own life, he shows how this mentality, drummed into so many men and boys, can lead men to disrespect, mistreat and abuse women and each other. His solution: Break free of the “man box.”

Exotic Beauties vs Regular Black Girls

Great read..Clutch is a real piece of work. Brilliant writers and complex subjects. I know this topic has come up between me and my friends often.

Here’s an excerpt:

How many times have we heard the term “regular Black girl” used to describe a woman who doesn’t have such traditionally European features as, say, Halle Berry? Why is it that Kelly Rowland is called “regular,” when she’s stunning? And how is it that Beyonce is “exotic,” despite being the African-American child of two African-American parents, with features that aren’t really so uncommon amongst Black people in this country?

And it makes the relationships between women all the more difficult at times, doesn’t it? Once I was made aware of the fact that Ethiopian women were fetishized by a number of African-American brothers (in particular, those who weren’t so excited by Black women who aren’t considered “exotic” or who wouldn’t go for an African sister who had darker skin and kinkier hair), I experienced a period of resentment toward them. It took me some time and some serious thought to realize that a sister is a sister and that I should not hold it against them that there are some men in our community who may value one sort of Black beauty over another one. Do I like it? No. I know that preference doesn’t always have deep roots, but I do know that certain hair textures and facial features (typically, those that are associated with European beauty ideals) get an inordinate amount of props from some of our people.
